1. Weaker environments + inhabited areas should be roped/fenced off.

-Protecting weaker animals and environment from erosion and extinction, species are saved and the environment lasts a lot longer.

2.Limit the number of tourists allowed to tour a specific area.

-too many tourists can erode/destroy an area. Popular areas are saved, and can be enjoyed a lot longer from long-distance photography.

3.Have rubbish bins available in all tourist destinations.

-rubbish can pile up in popular tourist locations and poison the environment. Animals can die and/or certain flora and fauna can be in danger.

Enviromental

Examples of negative consequences are the threat that natural environments are under. For example water, beaches, coral reefs and heritage sites. These resources are affected as they can get misused or over-used. Tourism in Vanuatu can lead to littering, increase in noise and rubbish disposal off the islands. Waste management is a big issue in Vanuatu. This is mostly in the more westernized areas, where hotels and retail shops are situated. Currently Vanuatu does not have a solution for the amount of rubbish produced. The increase of tourists in Vanuatu means more land is needed, this is becoming a threat for Vanuatu as locals are being brought out of their houses to use the land. There are also cases where trees and grass pastures are being bulldozed. Coral reefs in Vanuatu are an important part of tourism, so it is a worry that Vanuatu’s coral reef is being destroyed by tourist’s neglect of the reef. There is a high demand for water based activities and every time a boat puts its anchor down in the ocean, there is a chance the coral will be damaged. Many boats go out every day so this would have a huge impact on Vanuatu’s eco-system. The waterfront resorts have jettys, which cause sand to build up and not move naturally, causing erosion of the island, and leaving unstable land to build on.

Effects of tourism

In Vanuatu

Economical

Together, tourism and construction activity have driven economic growth in Vanuatu over the last decade. In a popular article, The Conversation, point to Vanuatu’s ‘uneven dependence on tourism’. Cruise companies, their passengers and crew spent $34.6 million in Vanuatu in 2013. This equivalent to approximately 10% of Vanuatu’s exports Private businesses receive 90% of this expenditure.

The 3 main negitive effects are:

Cultural

Tourism is bringing some changes in values and threatening indigenous identity. Crandell (1987) has concerns that Vanuatu’s indigenous cultures have experienced little change for centuries are threatened by the powerful influences of Western culture, and often accompany the arrival of mass tourism in the developing world. Research conducted by Pizam (1978) found that a heavy concentration of tourism on a destination area leads to negative resident attitudes towards tourists and tourism in general.

Tourism may also lead to conflicts between visitors and local resident such as culture shock. As well, the negative impact on environment and local culture can not be ignored. For example, innumerable people swarm into the same tourist destination and cause noise, congestion, and pollution. All of these break the peace of the local community, and the local inhabitants may prefer a peaceful life.
